mezzaterra11 – flat gallery is a project space run by two artists, MinJi Kim and Alessandro Dal Pont. It is located on the street of Via Mezzaterra in the historic center of Belluno, Italy. Even though it has a physical address on the gallery space, we decided to present the space in flatness, i.e., from the 'white cube' to the 'white square'. The ubiquity of the internet has opened up new perspectives not only on the presentation point of view of artists’ works but on the definition of exhibitions, which has contributed to, somewhat, decentralize the existing power by geographical concentration in the contemporary art field. In the meanwhile, we are alternatively satisfied with watching images/videos of shows through the web instead of visiting museums or galleries, setting aside the question of how many positive and negative aspects are taken. In this project space, mezzaterra11 – flat gallery, we mixed a traditional term of materiality of the exhibition space with a format of digital flatness, which still has conceptual volume like a space compressed. We believe that the physical space would contribute to the local community to access and experience contemporary art; and exhibitions in a flattened space would allow artists to experience a unique form to present their works. ------------------------------ mezzaterra11 - flat gallery è un project space gestito da due artisti, MinJi Kim e Alessandro Dal Pont, ed è situato in via Mezzaterra, nel centro storico di Belluno. Abbiamo deciso di presentare lo spazio, che pur dispone di un indirizzo fisico, in modalità piatta, passando dall’idea di ‘white cube’ a quella di ‘white square’. Anche nell’arte contemporanea l'ubiquità di internet ha aperto nuove prospettive, non solo riguardo alla presentazione del lavoro degli artisti, ma anche in merito alla definizione di mostra, contribuendo a relativizzare l’importanza di luoghi considerati centrali da un punto di vista geografico. Nel frattempo, senza entrare qui nel merito degli aspetti positivi e negativi legati al fenomeno, accade che ci si accontenti di vedere le mostre attraverso la documentazione fotografica e video pubblicata sul web, al posto di visitare gallerie e musei. In questo project space, mezzaterra11 - flat gallery, abbiamo mescolato un'idea tradizionale di materialità dello spazio espositivo con un formato di piattezza digitale che, come uno spazio compresso, mantiene un volume concettuale. Ci piace pensare che lo spazio fisico possa dare un contributo nell'aiutare la comunità locale a fare esperienza dell'arte contemporanea e che le mostre in modalità piatta offrano agli artisti la possibilità di sperimentare una singolare forma di presentazione delle loro opere.
